Deprived of his go‑to shots, he dropped the second game but glided around the court so smoothly he eventually ran his opponent into exhaustion. Our lone victor and hero of the night.
From what I hear, Greg turned his match into a contact sport. Reports say his opponent hit the deck at least once, not exactly Queensberry rules. Those high serves floated through the rafters like lost balloons, yet Greg still nearly nicked it. Dramatic stuff.
Mark faced pinpoint serves, nasty drops, and orbiting lobs. He resorted to his trademark Velcro Wall Return, hugging the side wall and smashing low with alarming ferocity, occasionally almost hitting himself. No win, but full effort.
Elwyn, freshly back from the COVID trenches, work chaos, and lost fitness, showed flashes of old form. His opponent’s accurate placement and tight drops kept him from finding rhythm, but the signs of a comeback were there.
As for me, my left‑handed opponent had me stretching in all directions. Finally warmed up by the 2nd game, I started serving from wherever I stood, tactical laziness, call it efficiency. Held game points I couldn’t convert, gutted I didn’t push it to a fourth. After the match, the scorer casually said afterwards, “He was tiring.” Perfect timing.
Final score 1‑4, but with our banter, lung power, and heroic storytelling, it felt 5‑0 at the bar. |
